SWOMEN has recruited more than 350 Faculty Appointed preceptors in communities across Southwestern Ontario. In 2003-2004, two SWOMEN Windsor faculty members received Teacher of the Year Awards from The University of Western Ontario. In 2005, a faculty member received the PAIRO Teacher of the Year Award. This demonstrates the high calibre of teaching provided by SWOMEN adjunct faculty.

As a preceptor, you have the opportunity to share your joy of practicing in a rural or regional community with young medical learners who are making career and location decisions. Becoming a preceptor provides a physician with support from SWOMEN and the wider Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry on the best practices of teaching medical learners in Southwestern Ontario. You will join approximately 350 other physicians in Southwestern Ontario, who are busy clinicians, but who value the chance to share their knowledge and experience with medical students and residents. As a preceptor you form part of recognized and valued Faculty of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.
Our Objective:
Our objective is to introduce medical students and residents to clinical educational opportunities in rural regional SWOMEN teaching sites in Southwestern Ontario.
Benefits of being a SWOMEN Preceptor
Physicians are appointed as Faculty at the Adjunct Professor level, typically for three years.Equipped with a log-on and password Adjunct Faculty has extensive use of on-line medical and e-journal resources from the Taylor Library at Western. Comprehensive training on access to these resources is provided through the Continuing Professional Development. A wide range of Faculty Development seminars are offered in London and throughout Southwestern Ontario communities varying from computer applications to workshops on “Confronting and Assisting the Failing Clinical Learner”.Access to Mini Fellowship Funds for the purpose of attending conferences as it relates to teaching and medical education.
Faculty / Preceptor Appointment Application Process
Preamble:
Physicians wishing to teach Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry Residents and Medical Students require an Adjunct Faculty Appointment. Appointments are granted at a Clinical Department level and governed by The University of Western Ontario. Preceptor teaching payments can only be made to Adjunct Faculty. While SWOMEN staff facilitate the entire appointment process, candidates are responsible for a completed application package and a returned signed offer letter.
Steps:
1. Contact the SWOMEN Assistant Dean or clinical specific Academic Director in your specialty or region informing them that you are interested in becoming a SWOMEN Preceptor. The Assistant Dean or Academic Director will be required to provide a letter of recommendation to the Chair your respective clinical practice. (i.e. if you are a surgeon, then the letter is directed to Chair, Surgery) Brenda Hennessey, SWOMEN Administrative Coordinator receives this letter and facilitates the process.
2. The SWOMEN Administrative Coordinator will forward the letter of recommendation to the appropriate Clinical Department at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry for approval to proceed with the faculty appointment process.
3. When approval is received from the Clinical Department, SWOMEN will notify the preceptor candidate and forward an application package.
4. Please complete and return entire application package to the SWOMEN Administrative Coordinator.
5. The SWOMEN Administrative Coordinator will forward the completed application package to the Clinical Department.
6. The application package will then be reviewed by the Clinical Department’s Appointments and Promotions Committee.
7. Upon approval the Clinical Department will forward documentation to the Dean’s Office in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.
8. The Dean will send the preceptor candidate a letter offering an Adjunct Faculty Appointment. It is critical that the candidate sign and return the Offer Letter to the Dean’s office within the timeline provided.
9. Upon receipt of the Offer Letter in the Dean’s Office, the package is forwarded to the Faculty Relations Office for final approval from the Provost and Vice-President (Academic).
10. The Faculty Relations Office will forward your information to Payroll in The University of Western Ontario’s Human Resources Office. The Faculty Appointment process is now complete.
Faculty Development & Research Opportunities Mini Fellowships
The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry offers Faculty Development Mini Fellowships for Western Faculty. The objective for the Mini Fellowships is to provide career development grants, designed so faculty members can acquire new knowledge and skills allowing them to better achieve their academic mission and individual career goals. Instructional Innovation and Development Fund (IIDF)
The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry offers the Instructional Innovation and Development Fund (IIDF) for Western Faculty as a source of funding for both students and faculty who wish to develop teaching materials relevant to curricula offered in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry's educational programs. The objective of the IIDF is to foster and encourage the development of technologically innovative methods for teaching, which fulfill a current perceived need and, which can be immediately implemented. This competition is annual with the deadline for application in October. Faculty Support for Research in Education Grants (FSRE)
The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry offers Faculty Support for Research in Education Grants (FSRE). These grants are intended for the promotion and facilitation of Scholarship in Education at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry (SSMD). Financial assistance up to $12,500 is available for the 2009 FSRE grant competition. All faculty members in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry are eligible to apply.
